A very rare and special dry pole bean variety. In researching this bean variety, I could not find any real information. It is unavailable for sale anywhere in Canada or the US.

Here's what I know:

This variety originated in Sarconi, Italy, a town in the province of Potenza, in the southern region of Basilicata.

The beans are best grown to be eaten dry. Pods are not tender when immature and are not ideal as a snap bean. Dry beans are a combination of white with patches of brown, black or beige streaks. The shape is oval and fairly plump.

Digestion of these beans is easier than typical beans, as the skin is very thin and breaks down quickly with cooking. They require less time to soak than other dry beans and cook much faster than others.

I acquired seeds many years back from a seed company, but the seeds were delisted. Since then, I’ve grown it in my garden and saved seeds yearly. Each year, they produce abundant pods on tall climbing vines that have enough time to develop, mature and dry in my short-season garden.

Growing Information:

Sow beans 1 to 2 weeks before the average last frost date. Check out my Seed Starting Calculator for specific planting dates for your area. This variety has a long growing window and requires extra time to reach maturity. Once they begin to grow, little attention is required. Just sow and leave them alone until harvest time.

Harvest when beans have filled out within pods and the pods are brown and dry.

Planting depth: 1 inch
Spacing: 3 inches apart

Provide a good support structure, as their vines will grow long.

By growing out this bean and saving seeds, you will help preserve a rare variety!

Shipping Information

Canadian Shipping

Shipping is calculated at the time of order and is based on the number of seed packets per order. All packages are shipped through Canada Post, and pricing for packages containing seeds are the same for addresses across Canada.

Larger items are calculated by weight and destination and will vary by province.

US Shipping

US seed orders are made at the buyer’s own risk, and we cannot guarantee delivery. We will receive and ship orders but cannot account for the actions of foreign customs, which is the reason for this non-guarantee. Unfortunately, I do not offer phytosanitary certificates, so if the seeds are confiscated or destroyed at the border, your order will not be refunded or reissued.

Non-seed orders are calculated by weight and destination and vary by state.

We cannot ship orders outside of North America.
