Tuvagliedda Pole Bean - A RARE VARIETY!
A very rare and special dry bean variety. In doing research on this bean, I was unable to find much information. It is also unavailable for sale anywhere in Canada.
I acquired this bean many years ago from a seed company, but it has since been delisted.
Here's what I know:
This variety originated in Sarconi, Italy, which is a town in the province of Potenza in the southern region of Basilicata.
The beans are best grown to be eaten dry. Pods are not tender when immature.
Beans are a combination of white with patches of brown, black or beige streaks. Shape is oval and fairly plump.
Digestion of these beans is easier than typical beans, as the skin is very thin and breaks down quickly. They require a lot less time to soak and cook much faster than others.
Planting instructions:
Sow these beans as early as you can, once any risk of frost has passed. They have a long window of growth and require extra time to reach maturity.
Beans may be harvested once pods fully develop and beans within fill out. However, if looking to grow for dry beans, harvest when pods are brown and dry.
Planting depth: 1 inch
Spacing: 3 inches apart
Provide a good support structure, as their vines will grow long.
By growing out this bean and saving seeds, you will help to preserve a very rare variety!
