Developed by brilliant lettuce breeder Frank Morton, of Wild Garden Seed.
A small, dark green gem lettuce, with red speckles. Striking leaves add a nice colour contrast in salads.
Mini heads will form as plants reach maturity. Grows with an open habit when immature, allowing you to harvest individual leaves. Harvest entire heads by cutting at the base, opening room for a succession crop.
Gem lettuce is a cross between romaine and butterhead, making it buttery and crispy with a hint of sweet flavour.
Growing Information:
Lettuce is hardy in cold temperatures, and may be sown directly in your spring garden, a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks before the final frost date. Feel free to start seeds indoors at least 6 weeks before the final frost date and transplant to the garden 3 to 4 weeks later.
Space seedlings at least 6-inches apart, in all directions. Sow seeds every 2 to 3 weeks for a continuous crop. Check out my Seed Starting Calculator for specific planting dates for your area, and to learn the last safe sowing date to achieve a succession crop.
For more information on growing lettuce, please see my post "A Complete Guide to Growing Lettuce".
