Phaseolus coccineus

Also known as Butter Beans in the UK and Potato Beans in the US, these Buffalo Beans were originally collected by Adaptive Seed company in February of 2008 while visiting the village of Moldovanesti in Transylvania, Romania, where they saw many water buffalo.

Vines will grow to 8 feet in height and were highly productive in my northern garden. Plants produced countless delicate yellow and white flowers that developed into curved green runner bean pods. Although pods may be eaten fresh when young, I found they were better suited for shelling beans or dry white beans.

Runner bean flowers always attract hummingbirds, contributing to biodiversity in the garden.

Growing Information:

Sow beans 1 to 2 weeks before the average last frost date. Check out my Seed Starting Calculator for specific planting dates for your area.

Harvest when beans have filled out within the pods. To harvest dry beans, leave pods on the vines until fully dry.

Planting depth: 1 inch
Spacing: 3 to 4 inches apart

Provide a good support structure, as vines are indeterminate and will grow long and abundant. Only plant one variety to save runner bean seeds, as flowers will readily cross with other runner beans.

Days to Maturity: 90-100
Price: $4.25 each
Packet: 20 seeds
Germination: 99%

Shipping Information

Canadian Shipping

Shipping is calculated at the time of order and is based on the number of seed packets per order. All packages are shipped through Canada Post, and pricing for packages containing seeds are the same for addresses across Canada.

Larger items are calculated by weight and destination and will vary by province.

US Shipping

US seed orders are made at the buyer’s own risk, and we cannot guarantee delivery. We will receive and ship orders but cannot account for the actions of foreign customs, which is the reason for this non-guarantee. Unfortunately, I do not offer phytosanitary certificates, so if the seeds are confiscated or destroyed at the border, your order will not be refunded or reissued.

Non-seed orders are calculated by weight and destination and vary by state.

We cannot ship orders outside of North America.
