This brilliant deep red lettuce makes a bold statement in the garden.
Large wavy leaves have a deep red colour, white veining and a green base. Sweet, crispy and refreshing. Harvest individual leaves, as a “cut and come again” type, or cut heads at the base opening room for a succession crop.
Grow with ‘Flashy Lighting Butter Oak’ for similar leaf structure and colour contrast in your salad. Suitable for spring and fall plantings and cool summers. In the heat of summer, plants will bolt. Consider using shade cloth and staying on top of watering to prevent bolting.
Growing Information:
Lettuce is hardy in cold temperatures, and may be sown directly in your spring garden a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks before the final frost date. Feel free to start seeds indoors at least 6 weeks before the final frost date and transplant to the garden 3 to 4 weeks later.
Space seedlings at least 6-inches apart, in all directions. Sow seeds every 2 to 3 weeks for a continuous crop. Check out my Seed Starting Calculator for specific planting dates for your area, and to learn the last safe sowing date to achieve a succession crop.
