If you’re looking for a gorgeous, semi-flat purple French bean, consider growing ‘Kew Blue’! This variety produces dark purple pods and stems and leaves also exhibit a purple colour.

When I grew this variety, I was very impressed by its prolific nature. Vines produced countless beans and required almost daily harvesting. By mid-summer, I left the remainder of the beans in place and the pods filled with beans, producing a wondering dry bean.

This variety is delicious, eaten raw, straight off the vine, and quite juicy. It also makes a wonderful pickled bean or may be added to many recipes where French snap beans are required. These beans will grow to an average length of 5 inches.

‘Kew Blue’ originates at Kew Gardens of the Royal Botanical Gardens in London, England.

Growing Information:

Sow beans 1 to 2 weeks before the average last frost date. Check out my Seed Starting Calculator for specific planting dates for your area and to learn the last safe sowing date to achieve a succession crop.

Harvest regularly to encourage a continuous crop. Harvest before beans form within the pods.

Planting depth: 1 inch
Spacing: 3 to 4 inches apart

Provide a good support structure, as vines are indeterminate and will grow long and abundant. Consider sowing a succession crop 2 to 3 weeks after the first sowing.

Shipping Information

Canadian Shipping

Shipping is calculated at the time of order and is based on the number of seed packets per order. All packages are shipped through Canada Post, and pricing for packages containing seeds are the same for addresses across Canada.

Larger items are calculated by weight and destination and will vary by province.

US Shipping

US seed orders are made at the buyer’s own risk, and we cannot guarantee delivery. We will receive and ship orders but cannot account for the actions of foreign customs, which is the reason for this non-guarantee. Unfortunately, I do not offer phytosanitary certificates, so if the seeds are confiscated or destroyed at the border, your order will not be refunded or reissued.

Non-seed orders are calculated by weight and destination and vary by state.

We cannot ship orders outside of North America.
