Ocimum tenuiflorum

Holy basil leaves and flowers make an excellent tea. They have a spicy clove flavour with hints of sweet mint, flowers, and black pepper.

A regular addition to my tea garden, consider planting holy basil in your vegetable garden to attract bees to pollinate your fruiting crops. Unlike culinary basil, which requires regular harvesting to prevent flowers from forming, holy basil is grown for its leaves and flowers. To harvest, cut plants back by half in mid-summer and they will grow back bushier and more abundant.

To process holy basil for tea, either tie bundles together and hang them to dry, air dry on trays in a cool location, out of direct sunlight, or dehydrate them at a low temperature until fully dry. Once plant material feels dry and brittle, strip leaves and flowers off the stems, break them into small pieces and store them in an airtight glass jar in a dark cupboard. In this manner, holy basil will remain fresh for at least one year.

To learn more about Holy Basil, it’s uses, medicinal benefits and how to grow and brew your own delicious cup of tea, check out my book, "Tea Gardening for Beginners”. Released July 26, 2022, and published by Rockridge Press, a division of Callisto Media. Signed copies are available through my shop here.

Growing Information:

Start seeds indoors, in a seed tray, at least six weeks before the final frost date. Cover your seed tray with a plastic dome and set it in a warm location. Germination may take 2 to 3 weeks, so patience is required.

Keep the tray warm by setting it over a heat mat or in a warm location until germination. Once germination takes place, remove the plastic dome and set your tray under grow lights. Transplant seedlings to the garden after the final frost date. Holy basil may be planted in a container, raised bed, or in-ground garden. Plants will grow to a height and width of one to two feet.

Holy basil requires full sun and well-draining soil.

Days to Maturity: 60 days from transplant
Price: $4.95
Packet: 0.2g (or approximately 500+ seeds)

Shipping Information

Canadian Shipping

Shipping is calculated at the time of order and is based on the number of seed packets per order. All packages are shipped through Canada Post, and pricing for packages containing seeds are the same for addresses across Canada.

Larger items are calculated by weight and destination and will vary by province.

US Shipping

US seed orders are made at the buyer’s own risk, and we cannot guarantee delivery. We will receive and ship orders but cannot account for the actions of foreign customs, which is the reason for this non-guarantee. Unfortunately, I do not offer phytosanitary certificates, so if the seeds are confiscated or destroyed at the border, your order will not be refunded or reissued.

Non-seed orders are calculated by weight and destination and vary by state.

We cannot ship orders outside of North America.
