Perilla frutescens var. crispa

Green Perilla, also known as Shiso, is a very aromatic herb, popular in Korean and Asian cuisines. The scent of green perilla is a cross between minty and sweet. Flavour is sweet with hints of anise, cinnamon, mint and basil.

Large green ovate leaves, with a toothed leaf margin, grow in an opposite pattern, allowing for pinching above the leaf node. Pinching will cause the main stem to branch, creating a bushier plant.

Plants will grow to a height of 2 to 3 feet (24 to 36 inches). Flower spikes develop later in the summer and may be used in cooking. Leaves may be harvested individually or in pairs and used for wraps, pickling, soups, stews and more.

I definitely recommend adding this interesting herb to your garden.

Growing Information:

Start seeds indoors at least 4 weeks before the final frost date, or sow directly after the last spring frost. Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep and cover lightly. Cover with a plastic dome or plastic wrap, to maintain a warm, humid environment. Once seeds germinate, remove the cover and place in your brightest south facing window or under growlights. Transplant out to the garden after all risk of frost has passed, as plants are very frost sensitive.

Green perilla prefers to grow in full sun.
