Is it a green tomato with red stripes or a red tomato with green stripes? What am I referring to? It's 'Girl Girl's Weird' Tomato!
When I originally chose this tomato for my garden, I was looking for a fun and striking large tomato. What caught my eye first, was its gorgeous colours and second, it's unusual name!
This tomato did not disappoint.
Originally discovered as a variant of 'Green Zebra' by Jessica Hughes in Canada, she ended up naming it 'Girl Girl's Weird Thing' after her dog "Girl Girl" who would steal tomatoes and eat them.
The flesh of this tomato is reddish-purple. It makes a wonderful slicing tomato, great on a sandwich. It is also wonderful eaten raw, as the flavour is sweet, yet mild.
Fruits grow to a size of approximately 14 oz, coming in just under a pound.
Growing information:
Plants are indeterminate and require good staking to support tall growing vines.
Start seeds indoors at least 6 - 8 weeks before the final frost date. Please refer to my Seed Starting Calculator for specific planting dates for your area.
Transplant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed and space your plants a minimum of 2 to 3 feet apart, depending on how well you stake them and stay on top of removing suckers.
Tomatoes grow best in full sun.
