An original variety from Wild Garden Seed, 'Flashy Lightning Butter Oak' produces beautiful dark green, oak-shaped leaves with dark red splashes.
Leaves have an exaggerated oak leaf shape, being wavy and large. Flavour is almost crispy fresh, while the mid-rib is crispy sweet. Heads are mostly open while young and will fold into a dense heart with a blanched pink centre before bolting.
Beautiful on its own or mixed with green and red varieties for salads. Harvest individual leaves by snapping them off at the base or wait until a head forms, then cut just beneath the head, above the soil line.
This is one of my favourite lettuce varieties!
Growing Information:
Lettuce is hardy to cold temperatures, and may be sown directly in your spring garden a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks before the final frost date. Feel free to start seeds indoors at least 6 weeks before the final frost date and transplant to the garden 3 to 4 weeks later.
Space seedlings at least 6-inches apart, in all directions. Sow seeds every 2 to 3 weeks for a continuous crop.
For more information on growing lettuce, please see my post "A Complete Guide to Growing Lettuce".
