The first time I tasted 'Brad's Atomic Grape' tomatoes in their true ripe form, I felt like I was biting into a black plum! These tomatoes are so tasty and sweet, that I needed to convince myself I'm munching on tomatoes and not stone fruits!
Skins have an almost crunch to them, while the flesh is nice and firm. Flavour is sweet, meaty and juicy. Acidity is mild. Delicious eaten fresh off the vine or sliced onto a salad. You could also have a little fun with them and make jam!
Fruits have the shape of an elongated cherry or grape tomato. Shoulders are wider than the tip, which tapers into a point. As the fruits develop, colour changes from unripe black/dark purple to dark green with electric red and brown striping at full maturity.
To check for ripeness, turn the fruit over to the unexposed side. This is where the colour change tends to be. Also, test for firmness. If the fruit has some give, it is ready. If it is firm, it needs more time on the vine. To learn more, see my YouTube video: "Tomato Harvesting Tips for Brad's Atomic Grape."
