If you're looking for a large, sweet, green beefsteak tomato, let me introduce you to 'Aunt Ruby's German Green'.
This variety is a strain that I've been growing out in my kitchen garden for the past 7 years. Each year, I select the largest and most uniform fruit, save seeds and replant again the following year. As a result, it is well adapted to my growing zone and climate, performs well in both wet and droughty summers and thrives if August nights suddenly become cool.
Fruit is ripe when the bottom side ripens to a light pink or yellow colour and fruit has a little give when pressed. ‘Aunt Ruby's German Green’ tomatoes can weight up to 2 lbs.
Growing Information:
Start tomato seeds indoors a minimum of 6 weeks before the final frost date. Please refer to my Seed Starting Calculator for specific planting dates for your planting area.
Tomatoes grow best in full sun and require consistent moisture, in order to avoid blossom end rot.
Transplant outdoors after all risk of frost has passed. Space your plants at least 3 feet apart, as plants will become large and very tall.
Aunt Ruby's German Green is an indeterminate type and requires proper staking in order to support the weight of the fruit and vines. Remove suckers to encourage growth of the main central stem.
